For each layout she shares the pros and cons based on her own experience. ? by Lisa Koplik Stepping into your own classroom for the first time can be an incredibly daunting experience, but it doesn’t have to be. Look at your classroom as an empty canvas, ready for you to try out 50 different arrangements over the next ten years as you tweak and perfect all of your choices to your liking.   As a classroom teacher who has been teaching for five years now, every August when I reenter the room, I move everything. Last summer, I moved my entire library across the room. Looking at your classroom with fresh eyes after the summer is an amazing way to gain new insight and ideas, but if you are struggling to come up with a good layout, here are some ideas. Student Desk Clusters I am the biggest proponent of having desk groups rather than rows. Kids need the ability to converse with one another about math, reading, writing, and so on. It always works out best when there are an even number of students so that everybody has a desk partner, but desk groups still work with odd numbers. In a classroom of 24 kids, I have always created four groups of six chairs due to space (rather than having more groups with fewer kids in each group). The ideal number of kids at a desk group, in my opinion, is four. Four kids leads to multiple different partnership opportunities as well good group discussion potential.   Pros: Kids have the ability to talk in discussion groups and have easy access to a variety of partners. Cons: It can be hard if you have an odd number because one kid does not have a desk partner. Having kids right next to one another can make test taking tricky.     Library I still have not yet found the best configuration for my classroom library, but I do enjoy when the library takes up one particular space in the classroom rather than having bookshelves all over the place. I have heard pros and cons of both layouts-- one section of the room being the library versus the library is “everywhere,” and here they are: Specific Section of the Room Pros: The kids know that when asked to go to the classroom library to find a book, they will always be going to the same place. When the library is all in one place, it has a more homey feel (in my opinion). It feels like  a special place in the classroom because it was worth designating as its own area. Cons: Having a separate space library can sometimes make it feel like books are not as important, because they are relegated to one chunk of the classroom. Sometimes the library space can be small and it can be difficult for lots of kids to look for books at once.   “Everywhere” Library Pros: Having a library of bookshelves all over the classroom lets kids know that books are important and all around us. It is much easier for kids to book shop when there is more space for them to walk around. Cons: Can feel less organized and less homey and curated when bookshelves are all over the room.   Teacher Desk For the first five years of teaching, my desk was smack in the middle of the room off to one side against the wall, facing the whiteboard, just like a student desk. I enjoyed this configuration because I felt like I was in the middle of the action, rather than hidden away in a corner or in the back of the room. This past June, I decided that for next year, I’d try out having my desk in the back corner because that works for so many teachers, and I am excited to see how the classroom feels with this change. In the middle of the room Pros: Easy to engage with all kids. Right in the middle of the action. Easy access for kids to come up to me needing help or to talk. Cons: Cannot see the entire room. If you're working on something that the kids shouldn’t see (parent emails, report cards, etc.), it's very difficult to configure the computer so that kids coming up behind the desk won't see. Blocks some of the space  that could be used for student desks, the library, side desks, round tables, and so on. In the back corner Pros: You can survey the entire classroom. Placing the  desk out of the way means you're less likely to sit down and step away from the kids who need help. It's easy to do any work needed without kids seeing your computer screen. Cons: You're away from the action. May make kids feel like you're  far away emotionally. More likely to get  messy since it's  out of the way (and as someone who already has a messy desk even in the middle of the room, we will see…). In the front Pros: You can survey the entire classroom. Easy for kids to access. Cons: It can feel authoritarian. Very traditional, reminds me of classrooms in the movies or classrooms in middle school and beyond.     Aside from kids' desks, the teacher desk, and the library, you should definitely have at least a couple of “side desks” for kids to work at if they need space, have a behavior plan, need a break, and so on. These side desks in my classroom are identical to the kids’ desks, but are located strategically around the classroom, totally alone. Also, my classroom has a round table for student work as well as a horseshoe table, which is an amazing table to facilitate small groups and easy discussion.   Obviously an elementary school classroom will also have a rug, which should be located in a space where all kids can fit on or near it and can all see the board! Designing the most efficient classroom looks different for everybody, and there is zero shame if it takes ten or twenty or even more years to perfect. In this soliloquy, Hamlet reveals the grief that has been gnawing at his mind. He wishes that religion did not forbid suicide so that he could kill himself and be rid of this grief. He later hired a man to model the giants shape and cover it in wax and created a plaster replica. The replica was put on display at New York and claimed that it was real and the other one was fake. She was banned from taking anymore pictures, but her mom, Polly, was convinced they were real. In the summer of 1919, the whole situation became public and an author wrote an article saying these fairies were real. The model was developed with a combination of several existing models (Compound Model) and is a type of hybrid structure.With guiding principles from the Boundaryless Organizational Design, the Simple Structure Organizational Design, and Congregations model, this model is a Communications Paradigm that serves to bring out the best in the organization by investing time up front in exchange for future efficiencies. The models design, the basis for the model, implications for leaders and followers, literature review and gaps, and the ethical considerations will be discussed below. Model Design The SMTOP model is a Compound Communications model that exploits the benefits of several organizational paradigms and theories.The model uses self-managed teams who are comprised of meticulously selected team members. Similar to the fundamentals of the Congregations model, the members are grouped together based upon personality, emotional intelligence, and individuals work preferences. SMTOP teams do not have formal, hierarchical structures but rather share the responsibility for governing the team and managing the work. The distinction is that the SMTOP teams are developed around personalities and emotional intelligence. Organizations can use a combination of the models and can vary their use based upon what the organization needs at the moment, or upon the current state of the organization or its o perations.The models are organizational preferences, but do not bind the organizations to them, never to be varied from. As noted, not all organizational structures fit neatly into a particular paradigm, and some may include characteristics of several different styles. Organizations might contain several paradigms with each supporting a different aspect of the organization. There might be one for overall organizational control, another for communications, a third for production, and so on (2005). The proper mixture of paradigms and their use is critical to organizational success.Horling and Lessor believe that the organizational design employed by an agent system can have a significant, quantitative effect on its performance characteristics (2005, p. 1). The qualitative aspects could be affected as well. The choice for the overall organizational structure can determine the tone within the organization and can positively or negatively affect its productivity. The leaders or owners, w hich ever may be the case, need to take a careful look at the organization and its mission, vision, and goals to determine which structure best fits.According to Kates, The reliance on downward communication that most organizations exhibit inevitably leaves mid- and lower-level staff feeling disconnected. The different messages they hear from their leaders undermine their own ability to work together across organizational boundaries, which presents a challenge (Kates, n. d. , p. 29). The SMTOP model reduces the problems that arise with downward communication because most direction comes laterally and collaboratively. The teams are communicating daily and share information as a group.What appears to be lacking in literature and research is how employees view organizations that are developed based upon on paradigm or another. A wide variety of articles and research papers exist that discuss the different models, but there does not seem to me any qualitative studies dealing with employ ee views or preferences. Ethical Considerations As with any business or leadership model, there must be ethical considerations taken into account. With the SMTOP model, the biggest potential issues regarding ethics would be related to the employees personalities.The team members personalities, the same ones that can make this model effective, can destroy the effectiveness of the model if not monitored and managed. One personality-based ethical consideration would be regarding the opportunity for favoritism. Not surprising is that people can like or dislike others and whether he or she likes the person will determine his or her attitude toward the person. Additionally, sub-groups can form with in larger groups. The members of the subgroups can create attitudes and patterns of behavior that can show favoritism toward other members.The favoritism can give certain privileges to the chosen few that others do not get. The rest of the group may feel slighted because of the behavior and mor ale may be affected. Another personality-based ethical issue may come in the form of an uneven workload. This is where job assignments and amount of work are not evenly distributed among the members. The uneven distribution can be caused by individuals taking advantage of the freedom-based structure or can be based upon the favoritism as previously explained. The last potential ethical problem is with group regulation and policies.This can occur anytime an organization can self-monitor. The lack of formal structure can introduce the possibility of a lawless environment where employees can go rogue because they believe there is no one around to hold them accountable. The damage caused by ethical dilemmas can be managed and reversed if need be. The organizational developers need to take the time and effort to properly set up the organization to ensure the chosen members are committed to the process and have the emotional intelligence and maturity to make the process work.Any employee who proves to be unable or unwilling to fully embrace the process must be terminated. Conclusion The SMTOP embraces the concepts of several existing organizational paradigms. The hybrid model focuses on meticulously structured groups who are comprised of like-minded individuals with similar goals. The theory behind the model is that grouping the employees based upon personality and work preferences creates a more efficient organization with increased morale. Citizens United - A Primer on the Court Case Citizens United is a nonprofit corporation and conservative advocacy group that successfully sued the Federal Election Commission in 2008 claiming its campaign finance rules represented unconstitutional restrictions on the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech. The U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision ruled that the federal government cannot limit corporations - or, for that matter, unions, associations or individuals - from spending money to influence the outcome of elections. The ruling led to the creation of super PACs. â€Å"If the First Amendment has any force it prohibits Congress from fining or jailing citizens, or associations of citizens, for simply engaging in political speech,† Justice Anthony M. About Citizens United Citizens United describes itself as a being dedicated to the goal of restoring government to U.S. citizens through education, advocacy, and grassroots organization. â€Å"Citizens United seeks to reassert the traditional American values of limited government, freedom of enterprise, strong families, and national sovereignty and security. Citizens Uniteds goal is to restore the founding fathers vision of a free nation, guided by the honesty, common sense, and good will of its citizens,† it states on its website. Origins of Citizens United Case The Citizens United legal case stems from the groups intention to broadcast â€Å"Hillary: The Movie,† a documentary it produced that was critical of then-U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, who at the time was seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. The film examined Clintons record in the Senate and as the first lady to President Bill Clinton. The FEC claimed the documentary represented electioneering communications as defined by the McCain-Feingold law, known as the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002. McCain-Feingold prohibited such communications by broadcast, cable, or satellite within 30 days of a primary or 60 days of a general election. Citizens United challenged the decision but was turned away by the District Court for the District of Columbia. The group appealed the case to the Supreme Court. Citizens United Decision The Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in favor of Citizens United overruled two lower-court rulings. The first was Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce, a 1990 decision that upheld restrictions on corporate political spending. The second was McConnell v. Federal Election Commission, a 2003 decision that upheld the 2002 McCain-Feingold law banning â€Å"electioneering communications† paid for by corporations. Voting with the Kennedy in the majority were Chief Justice John G. Roberts and associate justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. Dissenting were justices John P. Diabetes affects the body's ability to use blood sugar for energy. The main types of diabetes include type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. A person with uncontrolled diabetes can run into a lot of problems later in life. If not controlled, diabetes can put you at risk for a multitude of complications that can affect nearly every organ in the body. These organs may include, the heart and blood vessels, the eyes, the kidneys, the nerve endings, and also the gums and teeth. Later in life a woman with uncontrolled diabetes can also face problems in her pregnancy.A person living with diabetes has a normal life for the most part, if they maintain a healthy diet and keep their diabetes under controlled, however, if it is not controlled it may lead to high risks complications, for example losing a toe, or even their eyesight. I have been a diabetic for half of my life, since the age of 12 years old. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication for one to control their di abetes, but once it is in control, you can live a very normal life! She has said that studies show that having a regular eye exam, and your eyes dilated, along with timely treatment of diabetes-related eye problems could prevent up to 90% of blindness related to diabetes.Along with blindness, diabetes is also known to be the leading cause of kidney failure in adults in the U. S. Drugs than drugs that lower blood pressure, even if you don't have high blood pressure. Over time, high blood sugar levels can harm the nerves. This can lead to loss of sensation or feeling which usually starts in the toes or pain and a burning sensation of the feet. Diabetes related nerve damage can also cause pain in the legs, arms, and hands, and can cause problems with digestion, going to the bathroom, or even having sex. People with diabetes are at high risk for gum disease.Keeping your diabetes under control, seeing your dentist regularly, and taking good daily care of your teeth can prevent gum disease and tooth loss.
